Countdown to Colombia

My last day of work and one step closer to Colombia

Right now I'm on my way to my last day as a tax accountant. In less than two weeks I'll be flying off to volunteer in Colombia for a year with WorldTeach. I've been in public accounting for less than two year but if feels like much longer, most likely due to all of those overtime hours. Leaving comes with a never ending list of questions. Where will I be teaching in Colombia? What ages will my students be? Is it safe? Will I like Colombia? Will Colombia like me? Will my meager Spanish be enough? Will I be a good teacher? Do I want to teach for the rest of my life (or even the next five years)? Will I go back to public accounting? Will I come back to Boston?

I'm not sure if I have answers to any of those questions yet. But here's what I do know: I'm leaving for Colombia on July 3rd to a suburb or Bogotá where WorldTeach provides us with three weeks of teacher training. WorldTeach is a non-profit based in Cambridge that collaborates with local governments in 18 countries to bring native English speakers to teach students from kindergarten to university. I've been fundraising for the past month or so in order to cover my program costs and a teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) license. I've currently raised $2,491, 99.64% of my goal. My fundraising page will be open until I leave for Colombia and donations will definitely be appreciated.

The name for this blog, living sin fronteras, is my goal for the next year or so. To live in Colombia and to cross  cultural, language and personal borders in order to become a confident teacher, a passable Spanish speaker and a better world citizen. I don't know what to expect in Colombia and I certainly don’t know what I plan on doing after my program in Colombia ends. Hopefully, somewhere along the way, I will discover where I want to go next.

Donations can be mad

One thing I will definitely miss about working in public accounting is the view that it comes with.
